Word Woman

Welcome to another spine-tingling episode of Word Woman's Weekly Work-Out! Allow me to give a warm welcome back to school to all you students out there and encourage you (and everyone else) to ramp up your brain power with a little mental exercise. Here's the Word of the Week to get you started:

Ignominy: [noun] disgrace, infamy, dishonor (ignominious, adj.)
-- "The New York Times Everyday Reader's Dictionary of Misunderstood, Misused, Mispronounced Words", Laurence Urdang, Ed., Quadrangle/The New York Times Book Company, 1972.

Example: The ignominy of Gerald's failure to sink the final free throw which would have won his team the championship lasted long past his college career. It was still a hot topic of conversation at the ten-year class reunion, which explained his conspicuous absence from the festivities.
