Colorful Circulation

We've endured a week of smelling paint fumes up in the circulation department and now we can see the results. Here's a peek at what will be above and behind the new accounts desk. For now, our old checkout desk is still standing.

Soon the carpet will go in the new account desk area, then it will be time to build a desk.

Maybe it won't be so bad after all

Change is aways hard and going through the changes, with all the chaos that brings can be even harder. That being said, I will be glad when the changes are all in place and there is a little less chaos. As for now I must say that although my initial reaction to the color scheme of red, navy and pumpkin was less than positive, having had a sneak peek at the Young Adult area I have been pleasantly surprised with the look... bold but comfortable on the eyes (at least mine). I tend to like nature colors and while no colors are going to please everyone, I like the way these look together.
The space designers that have been working with us on this project hve been very professional and I am looking forward to the "final product" as well as some of the not-so-physical changes that will be made. Some in particular will be the time dedicated to checking with folks in the stacks to see if they need help rather than making them come to the desks, self checkout which will increase privacy for patrons, and the "grab-and-go" section which will include best sellers that will be available right near the front for those that want a good book but are limited in time to spend in the library.

The Construction Keeps Chugging Along

The doors to the YA room have arrived and are in place along with another coat of paint on the walls. Things are starting to look finished in there. That is if you avoid looking at the mess that resulted from the months of construction work.

Also, at this very minute, painters are working on the Stonehenge-like entrance to Entertainment Central. We have already started shelving CDs inside but we're waiting on the rest of our shelving to arrive before we start putting the rest of the AV materials in there.

In the next couple of weeks we will be starting the transition period for the circulation desk. Don't worry though, you'll still be able to check things out and pick up holds. More on THAT phase of construction later...

Dinosaurs in the bathroom?

Who are these guys, and what are they doing in the bathroom?

I really doubt that many of you have noticed what is happening in the boys' bathroom in the Children's Department. However, you really need to take a look, you'll find dinosaurs in there!

A team of volunteers from Hellgate High School have donated their time and energy to transform the bathroom into something just a little more interesting than your normal ho-hum bathroom.

It has been fascinating watching the entire process, from the research they did, to the rough sketches, and then transferring their ideas onto the walls, first in pencil, and then with paint.

I know, it sounds crazy when I tell people they need to come look at the boys bathroom, but really, come see what they have done. (and excuse me now, while I go take some more pictures of this work in progress)
