I Resolve To...

Happy New Year everyone. The stroke of midnight means it's time to sing that New Year Classic "Auld Lang Syne." A little research tells me this is a Scottish song translating to "times gone by." You can enjoy a few different renditions of this classic New Year song online with our Smithsonian Global Sound subscription.
Of course, the New Year isn't just a time to look back, but a time to make plans for the year ahead. I have no idea what my New Year's resolution should be. I see too many possibilities every time I walk through the library. Should I resolve to keep up on the world better with our collection of newspapers and magazines? Or I could resolve to watch a foreign film each month (an easy task if you come to World Wide Cinema). How about resolving to revisit some of my favorite childhood books?
Choosing a resolution is serious business. It can determine the course of your entire new year! Luckily, I found some help on ehow.com. According to them, there are some very simple factors to keep in mind - make your resolution realistic, be specific, break a large goal into smaller ones.
So what's your New Year's resolution? I'm looking for suggestions - something creative & fun. Send in your ideas by adding a comment here.

Recognized...19 years later.
After a period of only 19 years, the Missoula Public Library has officially recognized rap/hip-hop as a legitimate musical genre. Hip-hop music as an artform is much older, of course; 19 years is the length of time since the first mainstream hip-hop single.
In the past, rap and hip-hop cds were scattered between soul, blues, contemporary rock and countless other genres in perhaps an ode to the fact hip-hop borrows from all genres of music. But now, under the dewey classification 781.649, you'll find all of our rap and/or hip-hop in one place.

Sundaes on Sunday!
September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month (informally known as NLCSUM), and here at Missoula Public Library we have a few traditions associated with this month-long celebration of all things library. Certainly the most delicious among them is Sundaes on Sunday, an afternoon of ice cream and music. This year Ben, our blogmeister and local music guru, has arranged for Tater Pig to come and shake the walls with their sound. The fun starts at 2:00pm tomorrow with free tunes for all, and a suggested donation of $1 to enjoy one of our delicious Sundaes on Sunday!

Tiny Tales Presents... The JillBillies!

On Tuesday, Tiny Tales (our storytime for 0-3 year olds) hosted the bluegrass/folk group whimsically known as The JillBillies. The kids loved them!
We're hoping to add more music to our Tiny Tales programs. Please call the Children's Desk at 721-BOOK to find out specific dates.

Montana Library Association
IMHO it was a great time in Great Falls. There were lots of good workshops, and yes, I can attest to Ben being there. Speaking of Ben being in attendance it was his birthday while we were there so... Friday night during the membership dinner there was a rock band playing as the "entertainment" so I (being the shy retiring librarian that I am) went up to the band to ask them if they knew Happy Birthday. I gave them a little background on Ben so they would understand that he was a fellow musician and the next thing I knew thay had invited him up to play a song with them. It took a few minute to line up their play lists to a matching song but we were treated to a great song with bass solos by our Ben. What fun we had and there are pictures to prove it.

On the serious side I really learned alot from my workshops and meetings and am looking forward to toning up, or would it be tuning up my services at the reference desk.
