Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate

If you've had a chance to browse our book display shelves recently, you may have noticed a section devoted to Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate. This display was created in conjunction with UM's Montana Museum of Art & Culture (MMAC).

According to the MMAC, the Montana Human Rights Network obtained 4,000 white supremacist books in 2004. With help from the Holter Museum of Art, artists across the country were invited to transform these books into works of art that "reflect social justice issues and stimulate civic dialogue." You can view a portion of this altered book art project at the MMAC gallery through March 6th. The exhibition will then continue on at the Mansfield Library on campus.

For gallery hours or more information on Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate please visit: www.umt.edu/montanamuseum

We do have the books

I have such fun putting up displays and of course one of my favorites is the Read it for the Title display that I do once a year. In the meantime I found that these two titles made a great juxtaposition for my display at the end of the non-fiction range that includes domesticated animals, 636.089-641.691. So, come visit and see what interesting titles that you can find to read. Or check out some of our displays; we currently have displays on spies, road trips, foreign cuisine and others. And of course there is our always popular Staff Picks/Readers' Choice display.

What's your favorite book?

We librarians are always getting asked if we know a good book. Of course we do! But we're also always looking for your opinions on what's good and what's not-so-good. That's why we're encouraging teens to vote on this year's YRCA and TTT lists.

YRCA - Young Readers' Choice Award - is the oldest children's choice award in the U.S. and Canada. There are 3 divisions: Junior (grades 4-6), Middle (grades 7-9), and Senior (grades 10-12). If you fall in those age ranges, read at least 2 of the nominated books in your division and then vote on your favorite. We have a special display in the YA Room with all the Middle & Senior division titles, and a separate display in the children's room.

Teen Top Ten - This is a national teens-only vote for the best book published this year. 25 titles have been nominated (no, you don't have to read all 25 to be able to vote, but we know you want to!) and voting takes place online in September. See our display in the YA Room along with a list of all the titles, or find a full list here.

Happy Reading!

Book Displays Galore!

We have doubled our book displays after the addition of our new Power Walls. In addition to the permanent new fiction and non-fiction, staff picks and Wild About books, we have:

Books on grilling for the summer!

Montana fiction for the locals and wannabe locals!

And the ever important Chick Lit display!

We're excited to offer more book displays and reader's advisory for all of our patrons, and be able to highlight different parts of our collection. Stay tuned for news on the Grab 'n Go section coming very soon!
