Step Up to the Plate

Summer makes us think of 2 things: reading and baseball. We're combining the 2 tomorrow (July 11) with the return of our popular "Step Up to the Plate" event.

Visit the library at 11 a.m. Saturday to meet players from the Missoula Osprey, and listen to some of the stories they're going to read aloud. We'll have classic baseball snacks like peanuts and crackerjack, and if you bring your ball or mitt the players will autograph it for you. Even Ollie will here!

National Library Card Sign-Up Month

I hope all of you had a great Labor Day and are rested up for September. School's starting up, baseball is starting to wind down and you have to wear a jacket after dinner. I don't know about you, but it feels like fall to me already. In case you're interested, the fall solstice takes place on September 22nd at 3:44 in the afternoon.

Speaking of baseball winding down, our very own reference librarian Molly was able to throw out the first pitch at one of the last regular season Osprey games.

September for the library means National Library Card Sign Up Month. Here in Missoula, we'll be giving out gift bags to the first 100 new patrons who sign up for cards, having a adult gaming night, giving out sundaes in our annual Sundaes on Sunday event (music act still TBA), having an open house for teachers and school librarians (call us for details), and much, much more.

So we're here for you if you need to do research for school, or just need to getaway and forget about school. See you in the library this September.

Osprey Invasion!

Today the library was filled with baseball players, baseball fans, beauty queens and large diurnal, fish-eating, birds of prey. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the song "Take Me Out to the Ball Game,"we invited members of the Missoula Osprey to come down to the library for a meet and greet. Ollie Osprey and Miss Teen Montana joined in the fun.

We handed out hot dogs, peanuts and cracker jacks to 50 plus people and sang the song we were there to honor. We also created some librarian trading cards to hand out - which you can see right here. After some autograph signing and photo ops, the players helped Linette, our teen librarian, read some Spanish language stories about baseball to the children in attendance.

Then, Ollie headed upstairs to meet with our staff, and get his very own library card!

Success! I wonder what he checked out? Maybe Winged Migration?
